INTERVIEW︰JOEY MA I
. LOVE . FASHION
Joey Ma,
has recently emerged as one of the most famous fashion bloggers due to his
distinctive unisexual and extravagant style. His unique sensitivity to fashion
has been recognized by fashionistas around the globe. Interestingly, his unisex
style has not ceased to arouse controversies, there have been contrasting
comments over his exaggerating outfits. Yet none of the comments can affect his
passion to fashion due to his very own motto: Fashion is an attitude of life,
it reflects the most real and personal side of oneself. It is not as abstract
as we have thought to be, rather, it happens in our very daily lives.
HOW DO YOU START OFF AS A
FASHION BLOGGER?
Joey Ma: I
went to the states for studies when I was 20, and I majored in Economics. Back
then I had been a big fan of Punk Rock and I already knew that there has always
been an inseparable tie between music and fashion. Vivienne Westwood’s work
will be the perfect example. Since then I was mesmerized by Vivienne Westwood
and started to drown myself into fashion. After graduation in 2008, I got back
to Hong Kong and had been helping with family’s business. But my friends know
about my passion in fashion and have been encouraging me to upload my outfits
and share them onto the internet, hence in 2010, I start off with my very own
blog.
HAS THERE BEEN ANY CHANGES IN
YOUR CAREER AFTER BECOMING A WELL-KNOWN FASHION BLOGGER?
Joey Ma:
Actually I have just been continuing my career like developing and styling my
favorite outfits, but it may due to the broadening of connections, now I have
more fashion-related job opportunities such as styling and attending public
relations events of different brands. I am more than grateful that I am
recognized now. Some while ago I got the chance to work with my idol, Miss
Carol Cheng (publicly known as DoDo), for magazine cover photo shooting. I knew
that it’s been a while since Dodo last took similar jobs and I was so surprised
that she accepted the job immediately after knowing I would be her partner. I
am definitely flattered and at the same time feel recognized, it was such an
honor to work with her.
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF FASHION?
HOW WOULD YOU WEIGHT THE IMPORTANCE OF FASHION IN LIFE?
Joey Ma: I
think fashion is not as abstract or as far-fetching as people imagine, rather,
it is something that is very close to our daily lives. For me, fashion is an
attitude towards life. There are people who are casual in both their outfits and
way of living. As for me, I take fashion as a huge part of my life. It doesn’t
monopolize my life entirely, but I am very particular when it comes to
expression of style and life. Moreover, I think clothing style does not
necessarily need to be based on hundreds or even thousands of famous brands,
nor does it have to be anything trendy. Rather, it’s more important to know how
to do different mix & match, this is how you create and add depths to your
life and style.
CAN YOU ILLUSTRATE YOUR ART OF
CLOTHING? HOW WILL YOU DESCRIBE YOUR OWN STYLE?
Joey Ma: I
think it is of utmost importance to make sure you are comfortable with what you
are wearing. You have to find outfits that are proportionate and suitable to
your body figure. Find something that you can showcase your fortes or hide your
flaws. You don’t have to follow every single fashion trend and set a barrier
that limits yourself. As for me, I think I will describe my style as
extravagant, unisexual and flamboyant. I really like to match vintage items with
high-end brands and they will make surprising effects. Recently I am in love
with furry items and head piece. Using them as ornaments will create
outstanding effects.
DO YOU HAVE ANY CLOTHING TIPS
FOR THIS COMING FALL?
Joey Ma:
Naturally people will go for black and grey outfits in fall and it can be
depressing. I suggest people to try something more colorful so that it will
create a happier and energetic vibe. Accessories like head piece might help to
outstand your own style as well. Moreover, fur items will be a good choice for
this season. They are appropriate for either casual or formal occasions and
they can add depths into your overall style.
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE
EMERGING POPULARITY OF BLOG AND SNAPSHOTS?
Joey Ma: I
think it definitely poses positive effects to us. Unlike the past when we only
had limited channels to express, we can now express our personal style through
the internet. Not only can we broaden our horizons, it also sparks off
inspirations since we can share and exchange our ideas. I definitely support
and recommend people to communicate and exchange ideas through blogs and at the
same take more snapshots. It’s time to express more of yourself, to widen your
scope and be more accepting to other people’s way of dressing.
EPILOGUE:
A large
body built together with his irrefutable extravagance, Joey Ma has never ceased
to be the center of attention. Regardless of criticisms, Joey Ma is comfortable
in his own skin. I must say he earns my full respect for his perseverance to
maintain his own true self and style. It would not be easy for anyone who lacks
a genuine passion to fashion. I truly believe Joey Ma will continue his success
because I know that success will only go to those who persevere.
The photographer was kept asking me to give mean faces haha.
Both headpieces are from Pier Atkinson, and all clothes are from Tata Christiane. Clutch is from Givenchy. Socks and platform sandals are from Vivienne Westwood. I have to say, Pier Atkinson, Tata Christiane, Givenchy, and Vivienne Westwood are my all time favorite brands!
Love always,
Joey
